Description:Sir William Brereton (1604-1661) was a Parliamentary Major General of Cheshire, Staffordshire and Lancashire during the English Civil War. He established his headquarters in Nantwich in 1643, and took the castles of Eccleshall, Tutbury and Stafford. As well as a soldier, he was a politician and writer. His family seat was Handforth Hall in Cheshire.
