Michael Colin Cowdrey (1932-2000) was born in Bangalore, India, played cricket for Kent and England, captaining both sides on many occasions. He played 114 tests between 1954 and 1977, scoring 7624 runs at an average of 44.06. After retiring from playing, he was an administrator in the game. He was knighted in 1992 and was awarded a life peerage in 1997.
