Description:Oil painting. Half-length portrait of Colonel Sir William John Kent, C.B.E., T.D., D.L., J.R. (1877-1960), County Controller for Civil Defence for the County of Stafford, June 1940 - October 1945. His family home was Hough Hall, near Crewe, Cheshire. Trained as a solicitor, he became a Major in the Army in 1908 and Lieutenant Colonel in 1916. He was Chairman of the National Council for the Pottery Industry (1926-28), Justice of the Peace for Staffordshire (from 1927), President of North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce (1932-46), High Sheriff of Staffordshire (1942-43), and President of the British Pottery Manufactureres Federation in 1950.
