Description:The Guildhall in Newcastle-under-Lyme was built in 1713 to replace an earlier timber structure. Since then it has undergone a number of changes. The ground floor under the arches was originally open and used for markets while the upper floor was used for borough council business. In 1860 the ground floor arches were bricked up and the market moved out on to 'The Stones' in order to make more space for council meetings. In the same year the clock tower was added. This picture also takes in some of the shops on Newcastle High Street, a tram to the right of the picture and a and a man on a bicycle to left.
