Description:This photograph shows the view of Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre from the bottom of the High Street. The large building in the centre of the photograph is The Guildhall which was built in 1713. Originally, the ground floor was open and used for markets. In 1860 the ground floor arches were bricked up and a clock tower with four clocks was added. The market then moved outside onto 'The Stones' or the cobbled area just in front of The Guildhall. This photograph shows some traders selling their wares from carts that have been brought to market by horses. A tram runs through the centre of the picture and a dog darts out into its path a little futher down the road. The white building to the right of The Guildhall is the Police Station. This station opened in 1834, for Newcastle's first police constable, but was demolished in 1936. The Lancaster Buildings now occupy this site.
