Description:This photograph shows a train on the railway line in Silverdale, the former mining village that lies just outside Newcastle-under-Lyme. The Silverdale line was originally opened to serve Silverdale colliery but was also later used by passenger trains, such as the one seen in this picture. The pit head of the colliery can be seen to the right of this picture. The railway line closed in the 1970s and has been partially converted into a cycle lane and footpath. Silverdale Colliery closed in 1998. Adjacent to the former railway line is St Luke’s Church, that can be seen to the left of this picture.
