Description:The Mayor Choosing ceremony is a tradition in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The newly elected mayor,Robert Beresford, stands proudly in his regalia in front of the market cross. 1929 marked Beresford's third consecutive year as Mayor of the borough. In the background of the photograph the ironmonger's shop, Mellard and Sons, can be seen along with two Potteries buses - their routes clearly advertised on the side.
