Description:Trade directories such as this are a very useful source of information, providing details of principal inhabitants, trades people and other related and background information for towns and villages throughout the county. This extract relating to the village of Alton is from William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of Staffordshire, published in 1851. From it we can form a vivid picture of the village and its social structure at this time.
