Description:Uttoxeter Urban District Civil Defence Fire Wardens pictured with a District Council lorry and their equipment. In the centre foreground is a portable carbide lamp. The 'R' on helmet is for 'Rescue team' (note the relevant tools, ropes, picks etc.) The rear with 'DC' are the De-Contamination Team, with brushes and hoses etc. These would be used after a gas attack to remove skin-blistering agents.

This photograph was probably taken in the yard of the former Buntings brewery. The brewery closed in the mid-1930s, after which time the Uttoxeter Urban District Council took over the premises for use as a depot to house fire engines and ambulance.

Photographer: Gerald McCann (1897-1970) of Uttoxeter.
