Description:The Mock Mayor by Robert William Buss (1804-1875), oil on canvas,1844. Scene on the market cross when the townsfolk of Newcastle-under-Lyme held their own election of a 'mock' mayor in parody of the formal election among the councillors. The painting was bequeathed to Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council by Joseph Mayer in 1882.
