Description:The saggars were made of marl, which was hard wearing and could withstand many kiln firings. Ware would be placed into the saggar in order to protect it from contamination by smoke, etc during firing. The bottom knocker would make the base of the saggar by knocking it into shape using a large flat mallet.

Photograph taken in a Stoke on Trent potbank, possibly Longton.
