Description:Samuel Hewitt was born 22 Sept 1910 at Linehouses off the main Newcastle road. His father was a miner, on 3 November 1924 two days after leaving Goldenhill Council School, he went to work down a local mine. His first day on the job, he was hit by a runaway tub and bore a scar on his face for the rest of his life. He never went down the pit again and spent the majority of his life working as a bricklayer, residing for a good portion of his life in Scholar Green. His father was licensee of the Rising Sun public house in Scholar Green. He spent his last years living with his son Tony Hewitt in western Canada.
