Description:The S-5 seaplane was designed by North Staffordshire-born Reginald Mitchell (1895-1937).

It was built for speed and Mitchell’s intention was to win the Schneider Trophy.

This was awarded for speed and endurance, but also for technical innovation.

The S-5 had many clever uses of alternative technology, such as the use of copper sheathing instead of radiators to save weight and drag.

This and many other features helped the plane win the Schneider Trophy.
