Description:View looking down Stafford Street, towards Mount Street. In the background is the Chell Road gasometer. The town's first gas works were built by William Edwards and Co. on this site in 1829. By 1949, when the works were taken over by the West Midland Gas Board, none of the original buildings remained. The works were cleared in the late 1960s and a Sainsbury's supermarket was built on the site. In later years Sainsbury's moved across Chell Road to a larger site and their previous premises are currently (February 2023) occupied by Wilko.
