Description:Dermot Martin, the young patient in the photograph, recalls: 'I was born in 1954 and went into Biddulph when I was five with the condition known as Perthes disease. Some of my earliest memories are of life at the Grange. I spent about 18 months there and shed tears when I had to leave. Although the staff names have long faded from memory their faces still come back to me. They were marvelous and thanks to the wonderful care I made a full recovery and was able to play football and tennis and run marathons. Sadly there were many young boys for whom the condition was diagnosed too late and they had to walk with a pronounced limp all their lives but these days I gather it is a less common condition'.

The nurse pictured second from left, with her cap out of shot, is Doreen Barker(nee Betts).
