Description:Miss Plant, on the right, was the teacher of this class.

Corporation Street School replaced the British School in Earl Street in 1894. The first master was John Wheeldon and today the school is named after him.

In 1909 the building was extended to form separate boys', girls' and infants' schools, but the latter two were rebuilt in the 1960s when it was discovered that brine pumping in the area had led to subsidence.
