Date:January 1913

Description:The horse-drawn ambulance seen here was purchased in 1913 and remained in service at Chatterley Whitfield Colliery until about 1930 when a motor ambulance replaced it.

Injured miners were taken to the local hospital for treatment. After the 1880s ambulance teams were formed at many collieries to administer first aid prior to the arrival of the local doctor.
