Description:View looking down Gaolgate Street, towards Market Square.

Behind the clock is Sidney House. This building (which in 2004 houses Cafe Nero) was the birthplace of Thomas Sidney in 1805. Thomas became Lord Mayor of London in 1853 - 1854. His widow erected a fountain in his memory in Gaol Square in 1889.

Many of the buildings remain unchanged above shop window level, but the group of shops on the right have been demolished, victims of road schemes in the town.
