Description:Pictured here in around 1960, Uttoxeter remained an important junction on the route of the old North Staffordshire Railway.

To the south - behind the camera - the line still runs around the edge of town before bearing west towards Blythe Bridge, Longton and Stoke.

To the east, the tracks still run parallel to the racecourse before heading towards Burton-upon-Trent and Derby.

The line branching to the north west no longer remains. It once connected Alton, Oakamoor, Leek and Macclesfield via the Churnet Valley line. It also connected Stafford in the south, and to the north (the track on the left of the picture) with Ashbourne and Buxton over what is now the Tissington Trail for horses, walkers and cyclists .

A section of the Churnet Valley line now operates between Cheddleton and Frogall as a heritage railway an visitor attraction.
