Date:5th of July 1796

Description:The management of a proposed new Commercial Canal has held a meeting at the Swan Inn, Hanley, to discuss the findings of Mr. Whitworth, who has been surveying the route planned for the new canal.

The route of the proposed new canal

This route was to stretch from Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire to Nantwich in Cheshire, via the Potteries.

Whitworth has discovered that conditions are favourable enough to build the canal.

River boats

When complete the Committee believe that the canal would 'facilitate and extend the great national object of an inland communication between various Ports, by means of River Boats.'

Public meeting

They call for a General Public Meeting at the White Hart and Star Inn, Uttoxeter, for 26 July 1796.

At this meeting they will discuss the possibility of applying to Parliament to bring the scheme into effect.

This item is now amongst the collections at Stoke-on-Trent Museums.
