Description:The canal boats to the left all belong to William Sproston who was a farmer and coal merchant living at Navigation Inn (now Navigation Farm) on Meadow Lane in Little Haywood. In the centre is a signal box on the Stoke-on-Trent to Colwich line of the North Staffordshire Railway. To its right, in the distance, can be seen the tower of Colwich church.

This stretch of the Trent and Mersey Canal was engineered by James Brindley and opened in 1770.
