Description:Two of the characters from the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, the Hobby Horse and the cross-bow bearer. The dance procession usually starts at 8.30 am on the vicarage lawn and between 8.30-9am the dancers perform on the lawn and at the Market Place. At 12 noon the group appear at Blithfield Hall and from 4.30pm on they reappear in the Market Place. The origins of the horns is not clear, but have been carbon-dated to around 1065. The origins of the dance are obscure, and the earliest documentary reference comes from Robert Plot's 'Natural History of Staffordshire', published in 1686. It has been suggested that it is connected with the granting of forest rights to the villagers of Abbots Bromley. The event is a popular attraction and brings large crowds to the village.
