Description:The annual New Years Eve Ball was a popular event at St. Edwards for many years, with the last one taking place in the 1940s. Traditionally staff had to alter their hours of working so that they could see in the New Year with their colleagues and patients. All the wonderful costumes, including clowns outfits and sailor-suits were made by patients. Just as the sexes were strictly segregated in the hospital, the men and women sat on either side of the hall and only mixed on the dance floor. At the back of the hall on the stage is the smartly dressed Asylum Orchestra, members of the hospital staff, providing the music. Dr. W.F. Menzies, the first Medical Superintendant at the hospital was the conductor of the orchestra when this picture was taken.
