Description:This plan is of the female imbecile ward (so called at the time) built in 1894 at Stoke workhouse on Newcastle Road. Workhouses were originally meant to be places where the poor could work in return for food and board but by the 19th century had become grim places used to house people from many parts of society. Many people with special needs were sent to Stoke workhouse with those suffering from serious mental illness being sent to St.Edward's Hospital in Cheddleton.
