Description:This plan is of the school block of Stoke workhouse. The block was constructed in 1842 at the smae time as the hospital.
Workhouses began in the 17th and 18th centuries as places where the poor worked in return for food and board but by the 19th century had become grim places where those unable to fully support themselves, like the old, unmarried mothers or those with physical or mental special needs, were sent to live in segregated conditions.
