Description:Speedwell Castle was paid for by proceeds won from betting on 'Speedwell', a horse owned by the Duke of Bolton. It is thought to have been built in around 1750 by William Rock, and was built in the Gothic style. Between about 1896 and 1936 the building was used as a shop and was later converted into flats. At the time of this photograph Speedwell Castle was owned by William Brown, a Grocer, who used the bottom part of the building for his shop.

The man on the Pony & Trap is believed to be Dr. James who lived nearby at the Beeches in Bargate Street, Brewood. Acknowledgement: Thank you to Mr Bill Caffrey, Archivist, Brewood Civic Society for this additional information.
