Hixon Rail Disaster
Introduction: Hixon Rail Disaster

Date: 6 January 1968

Description: Firemen on the roof of a train carriage.

The rail accident occurred at the level crossing just outside Hixon when the inter-city Manchester to London express hit a lorry. The lorry, which had a police escort, was carrying a transformer to the English Electric depot on the disused Hixon airfield.

The level crossing was replaced by a bridge in 2002.
