Description: Malta was a British colony from 1814 until it was granted independence in 1964. The 1st North Staffords were part of the peacetime garrison there from 1893 to 1895. Until the end of the British Empire, a regular soldier could expect to spend a large part of his time serving abroad.

Through its history the Staffordshire Regiment has been involved in many campaigns and wars and has been stationed in many parts of the world. Formerly called the North and South Staffordshire Regiments, the two were amalgamated in January 1959. The Regiment is based at Whittington Barracks, near Lichfield.
